Rivka

NAME: Rebecca Cauchon

1. Where are your ancestors from?
My grandparents were from Rumania. They met coming over on a boat to the US in the early 1920's.

2. What  ethnic group do you identify most with?
I definitely identify most with the Jews and consider myself a proud Jew!

3. Find an image which represents your culture. Please explain why?
For me this image represents so much. It is a photo of the last rebels to be taken out of the Warsaw Ghetto. These Jews attempted to fight back and held off the Nazi's for several days. The woman in front reminds me of myself. She is first in line and does not look scared. She almost seems to be proud of herself. For me she is a strong symbol of the Jews during the Holocaust. Israel exists today because of Jews like her, who faught for their right to exist.

4. Find an image of a flag (s) you consider to be part of the your cultural heritage. Why did you choose this flag?
I choose the Israeli flag because I am a Zionist and believe that Israel has a right to exist. I spent several years in Israel and consider myself a Jew first and American second. I wish I could move to Israel someday, but I do not think that will ever happen at this point in my life.

5. Find an image of someone you admire most who is a great representative of your culture. Why did you choose this individual?
I chose Golda Meir. She was an early prime minister of Israel and a very strong woman. She is an excellent role model for every Jewish woman.

6. Do you have cultural pride? In three sentences explain why or why not.
I have pride in my Jewish heritage as I mentioned above, and feel very proud and fortunate to be Jewish. I celebrate Jewish holidays, display Jewish symbols and art in my home, and brought up my children to feel proud of being Jewish. I also tried to instill in them a love of Israel.
